Executive Functioning Skills & behaviour in SEND, Autism and ADHD

  • Aspire Family Hub Humber Avenue Coventry, England United Kingdom (map)

A child’s behaviour does not always tell us what they are struggling with underneath.

Children who find it difficult to follow instructions, manage their emotions, wait, cope with change, start tasks, stay focused or remember what they are meant to be doing may be struggling with their executive functioning skills.

Executive functioning skills are the brain skills we use every day to organise ourselves, manage emotions, control impulses, remember information, adapt to changes and get through everyday tasks.

When these skills are struggling, children may be seen as difficult, defiant, lazy, disruptive or badly behaved, when in reality they may be overwhelmed and unable to meet the demands being placed on them.

This supportive workshop will help parents, carers and professionals understand the link between executive functioning difficulties and behaviour in children and young people with SEND, autism and ADHD.

During the session, we will explore:

• what executive functioning skills are
• how executive functioning difficulties can affect behaviour at home and in school
• why some children struggle with emotions, instructions, attention and transitions
• why traditional behaviour strategies do not always work
• how to recognise what may be happening underneath the behaviour
• practical ways to support children more effectively

This session is suitable whether a child has a diagnosis, is waiting for assessment, or is simply showing difficulties that are leaving adults unsure how best to support them.

The aim is to help families and professionals move away from asking, “How do we stop this behaviour?” and begin asking, “What is this child struggling with, and what support do they need?”
