Executive Functions – Understanding the Skills Behind Everyday Life
Why is it so difficult to get organised, remember instructions, manage emotions or get started on something, even when we know what needs to be done?
These everyday difficulties are often connected to executive functioning — the brain's skills that help us think, plan, remember, respond and adapt.
For neurodivergent children, teenagers and adults, differences in executive functioning can affect everyday life in ways that are frequently misunderstood.
This interactive online workshop explores why these difficulties happen, rather than focusing simply on behaviour.
What will we explore?
Working Memory: Why instructions are forgotten, information gets lost and completing tasks can feel difficult.
Inhibitory Control: Understanding impulsive reactions, emotional regulation and why there's sometimes little space between a thought and a response.
Cognitive Flexibility: Why changes, transitions, unexpected situations and switching between tasks can be challenging.
Everyday Executive Functioning: Why getting ready, organising belongings, managing time and starting tasks can become overwhelming.
Practical Support: Ways to recognise executive functioning difficulties and provide support without blame, pressure or unrealistic expectations.
Who is this workshop for?
Parents, carers, older children, teenagers, neurodivergent adults and professionals who want a better understanding of executive functioning.
Older children and teenagers are particularly welcome. Understanding how their own brains process information can help them recognise their strengths, difficulties and individual support needs.
There will be opportunities to ask questions and discuss real-life situations.
